Moving Our Business Back Home To Niskayuna, New York

Dear Facebook friends and fans,
Life is full of passages, and today we are announcing one of our own. After almost twenty years on Upper Union Street, Sow’ s Ear Studio is relocating the business to our home office.  It’s been a wonderful run, but this move is best for us.
We will close officially at the end of July. In the meantime, we are having a moving sale, lots of great deals to be had. We will be here for Strawberry Fest on June 17th and during our regular shop hours as we prepare for the move.
I will still be accepting orders for re -painting your furniture, and will continue to do so even as we transition to our new digs.
We hope you’ll stop by while we are still here to chat and check out our moving sale.
Thanks to all our supporters. Hope to see you soon!
Rosemary and Lauren
With us moving our business to our home studio, we’re having a MOVING SALE.  All of Rosemary’s painted items are discounted up to 50% off, Lauren’s crochet and polymer clay items have been discounted, all other artists items remain at the same price.  This is due to the fact that we have to pay our artists.  Stop by STRAWBERRY FEST 2017 for Upper Union Street’s street wide event and our BIG MOVING SALE.

Spring Open House 2017 At Victoria Adamo

Normally we’re at Sow’s Ear Studio on Saturday from 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m., but this past Saturday Rosemary and I spent our Saturday at Victoria Adamo Day Spa for their annual Spring House.  Packing up my Jeep with Rosemary’s items and my items and setting up our booth Friday night before made our lives easier, so all we had to do was drive to Rotterdam, New York and promote our handmade items.   Thanks to Victoria Adamo, they provided a six foot table and we were able to bring both Rosemary’s items and my items, some of which were placed on the table, some of which were placed on the shelf we brought.

Not getting our hopes up in making sales, we were more interested in promoting the painted items and crochet items.  Meeting new people and visiting with other friends was fun on Saturday.  By the end of the day Rosemary and I were ready for a long nap.  Rosemary is also working on new product for her Etsy shop and hoping that her shop will be open by the end of June-July.  Rosemary will be selling mostly painted candlesticks, glasses, boxes for the time being.  We’re researching on how to ship the painted furniture and larger items.

Hello Italy

Ever since mom has had her shop in Schenectady, we’ve fell in love with this Italian restaurant named Scotti’s. Scotti’s is a family owned restaurant that makes the best Italian food. The owners are also good friends. Our family enjoys a good Italian meal a couple times a year and every time it’s the best.  I also love Italian food, but some food is not easy to prepare.

I love having someone make something that I’m not good at making so I can have a treat when going out.  This time we went to celebrate a belated birthday for my dad.  Our favorite dishes range from eggplant to seafood, to veal, to chicken.  Most of the time we order eggplant and seafood.  Last night, mom had the spinach ravioli special with a light red sauce, Dad had his favorite seafood with pasta and a Light Red sauce, and I had eggplant rollitini with a light red sauce.

March Madness

With mother nature fooling us the last two weeks, we’ve had warm weather, and it’s right back to feeling winter with temperatures that are below zero.  Not to complain about Upstate New York, but as I get older, the more I can’t stand winter.  Wanting spring so badly, I wore sandals for a few days.  Now I’m right back to wearing a closed shoe.

With a few more weeks of winter, it’s time to think about spring, flowers, fashion items, and painted items from Sow’s Ear Studio.  Figuring out with doing knit, crochet, or both knit and crochet, I’ve been coming up with some new baby blanket and blanket ideas for the home, along with table runners, rugs, scarves, and shawls.  Cowls will be worked on this summer and will be presented for the fall.

New handmade items are also in the works for both Sow’s Ear Studio and Where’s The Yarn.  Items include painted candle jars with poured candles by Rosemary and Lauren Prock.  Ever since helping out a friend with his daughter’s school, I forgot what it was like to burn candles and the lovely fragrance that comes with burning the candles.  I’m currently doing research on types of candle wax, fragrances, and designs for the outside of the candle jars.  It seems to me that soy and palm waxes are the most popular with candles.  See these candles come alive with Rosemary and Lauren this spring and summer.  Purchase these handmade pieces on Where’s The Yarn’s etsy shop, Sow’s Ear Studio’s etsy shop, and Sow’s Ear Studio shop in Schenectady.

Back open after our March Madness snow storm. Rosemary and Lauren are so looking forward to spring and some color outside.

Hello 2017

Happy New Year friends of Where’s*The*Yarn? and Sow’s Ear Studio.  With 2016 past and 2017 beginning, I think that 2017 will be a great year filled with new goals, dreams, and turning some of those dreams into reality.  With Rosemary doing painted furniture full time, getting her Etsy shop up and running, recovering from surgery, and looking forward to coming back to Sow’s Ear Studio.

Lauren has been busy as a beaver working on new projects, running the shop, and researching about more decorative crochet items, Lauren will be having some new, handmade items on her Etsy shop within the next couple of weeks.  See the rest of Sow’s Ear Studio come alive with Rosemary out and when Rosemary comes back from recovery.  See more items come to life with Where’sTheYarn?

Photo Of The Day: I-Phone Wallpaper Tropical Getaway

Not a fan of the winter, not a fan of the cold, considering my business is crochet. Crocheting is suppose to warm people up in the winter with scarves, blankets, fingerless gloves, and much more.

This weekend is suppose to be bitter temperature wise. Wanting warm weather in spite of the fact that Upstate New York is not warm year round, I’m working on some new bohemian things that are made for the cold and people who love winter and all it’s glory. I just completed a bohemian blanket for my bed at home and photos of this piece will be revealed this weekend.

I like looking at tropical themed pictures, dreaming of Key West, Florida, and wanting to eventually take a trip to Key West and possibly start a business during the winter. With looking at these photographs, the colors inspire me with my crocheting and polymer clay artwork. See more photos of my work and tropical I-phone photos soon.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Homemade Dunkaccino

Make the classic coffee and hot chocolate combination from Dunkin Donuts in the comfort of your own home with this simple recipe that I created this morning (December 20th, 2016).

1 cup of coffee.

2 tablespoons of instant hot cocoa.

International Delight Cold Stone Creamery, Sweet Cream.

*If you don’t have International Delight, half and half will do.

Pour your cup of coffee in your favorite coffee mug, add two tablespoons of hot cocoa, and add International Delight Sweet Cream.  Mix these ingredients together and enjoy your coffee treat.

Makes a great treat for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Adirondack Log

Recipes

I love the Bolton Landing and Lake George in the heart of the Adirondacks.  One of my favorite restaurants in the Adirondacks is The Log Jam Restaurant.  This is my all time favorite dessert from the restaurant.  This recipe is easy and requires no cooking.

2 Cooked Brownies.

2 Scoops Of Vanilla Ice Cream.

Hot Fudge On The Top Of The Vanilla Ice Cream.

Whip Cream On Top Of The Hot Fudge.

Cherry On Top.

On a dinner plate, add two cooked brownies, ice cream, hot fudge, whip cream, and cherry on top.  Enjoy anytime after dinner.

Photo Of The Day: I-Phone Wallpaper Beach Scene

Everyone says that winter 2016-2017 in Upstate New York hasn’t been all that bad with snow and messy weather.  Well I’m still not a fan of the cold weather.  Starting my car and letting my car sit for a few minutes to warm up, dressing in layers, and feeling like I want to hibernate in my home for six months.  The Prock family is not a fan of winter and all that comes with it.

For the last week it’s been bitter cold with a few flurries here and there.  The sun has been coming out a little here and there, but to me, it feels gloomy. Here’s yet a second tropical scene photo from an I-phone wallpaper app that I have on my phone.  In realty, I know it’s winter, in the back of my mind, I’d rather be in Key West, Florida.  The idea of not having to dress in layers and wearing a jacket is my kind of weather.  I picked this photograph because it’s filled with color, water, a beach, and a palm tree.  Anything but gloomy, cold weather.

Throwback Thursday: Christmas 2015 In Troy, New York

Generally the Prock family rotates with cousin Debbie (mom’s cousin) for the holidays, but with mom having health issues, we’ve been spending Christmas with cousin Debbie at her house. It’s nice to have to bring a dish and spending time with the family. I love taking photographs of Christmas trees, the holidays, and photos of the family. For Christmas 2016, we’re spending the holidays with cousin Debbie. Debbie loves to be the hostess at all kinds of parties and is creative with her parties.
This Christmas tree is in her dining room in her home, along with a white Christmas tree in her living room. Christmas dinners are also my favorite part of the holidays. With the appetizers, main meal, and dessert. See new Christmas photos from Christmas 2016 in the next week.

I’m very glad to say that I SOLD my rustic teal heart brooch this morning. I love this brooch because teal is my favorite color and I love the brown part of this brooch. When I was writing the description on my Etsy shop, this is what I wrote.

Hello Fall

It’s official, Fall is actually here.  Leaves changing colors, shorter days, colder days, wearing layers of clothing, and bundling up with some new scarves by Lauren at Where’s The Yarn?  I’ve currently working on new scarves for Sow’s Ear Studio and my Etsy shop.  All scarves are $45/each.  Scarves are made with yarn of all kinds including soft wool, cotton yarn, and worsted yarn.  Each scarf will have a different kind of stitch.  Stitches include single crochet stitch, half double crochet stitch, slip stitch, and other various types of stitches that I’m learning about along the way.  I’m also adding some fringe and fancy edges to my scarves when they’re completed. All scarves are machine washable and can be placed in the dryer on low heat. Buy an early holiday gift with a handmade scarf with my “BLACK FRIDAY SALE” on Thursday November 24th-December 11th, 2016.

My other goal is to not buy anymore yarn until the yarn I currently have is all used up.  No more buying yarn at Michaels and Herrschners.  My two favorite places to purchase yarn and burn a hole in my pocket.  I’ve got so much yarn to work with, I need to create some new designs for home and wearing.

Every time I see a new color of yarn, I always think of what I can make with it.  Well now I’ve decided to just create some new things with what I’ve got and then when I start to run low on my current yarn inventory, I’ll start to buy more.  Until then, you’ll see all the yarn that I currently have both at home and at Sow’s Ear Studio.  Both of these scarves will be added to my Etsy shop on November 1st, 2016.

Slip Stitch Used For Many Things

I’ve been crocheting since 2009 and learned only one stitch.  A simple single stitch. As time has gone by, I’ve decided to experiment with new stitches and techniques.  For example, I started this lovely nature scarf with a simple slip stitch.

A stitch that’s not lace, it’s closed.  With the slip stitch on this scarf, the stitches look big, loose, but the stitches are close enough to keep you warm during the long cold months.  I’m working on more blankets, scraves, fingerless gloves, and much more with this delightful stitch.

More Scrunchies On The Way

If there’s one thing that I learned that’s quick and easy to produce and makes a great gift, that’s my small and large scrunchies.  All scruchies are made with a hair elastic band, cotton yarn, and a small crochet hook.  This keeps the stitches together so you don’t see the elastic band.  Scrunchies can be found on http://laurenprock.biz at $7.50 each. Remember, shipping is free on my Etsy shop as well.

All items in my shop take 1-2 weeks to deliver, so if you need a scrunchie or anything else from my shop, be sure to order your item(s) fast.  This scrunchie is made with Premier Yarn Cotton Flair in aqua ice.  I love these scrunchies because the stitches are wrapped around the elastic band, working with the stitches doesn’t make the scrunchie look so big, and I make a fancy fringe when completing the scrunchie.

Scrunchies are great for girls with long hair, doing everyday activities, cooking, working in a restaurant, and want to keep their hair pulled back during long summer days.

These wonderful hair pieces also make a great stocking stuffer for Christmas, along with any other holiday, birthday, etc.  I have a total of twenty three scrunchies in my shop, so if you need more then one, there’s plenty.  Make one of these scrunchies a part of your hair collection today from my Etsy shop.

As Of October 5, Treasury Lists Will No Longer Be Available

Polymer Clay

Etsy has a lot of great things for people that are in the handmade business full time or part time to supplement income.  When I went on Etsy today and was going to create a new treasury list to my surprise, you will no longer be able to create a treasury list and edit your current treasury lists.

For those of you who don’t know what a treasury list is, a treasury list is where you create a list of various items from other Etsy shops.  These items could be a theme like Fall Is Here and the list could handmade blankets, scarves, fingerless gloves, and anything related to Fall that will keep you warm.

I like these treasury lists because you could type in any handmade item, make a list, and the shops/people that you add to the list noticed your shop.  People can send you comments, view your shop, and share the treasury list that you created.

The question is, why are they discontinuing the treasury lists and what do they have in store.  Whatever they have in store for replacing the treasury lists, I hope that it will be good.  I like Etsy because it’s free and you can keep your handmade items on your shop for four months. I know I’ve been on since April 2015, but making five sales has been good so far.  As they say, getting your own business doesn’t happen overnight.  I looking forward to seeing what Etsy will do in place of treasury lists.

Mourning A Fellow Merchant

Rosemary and Lauren’s favorite place to eat lunch and dinner is Gershon’s Deli, which is kiddy corner across the street from the shop.  We were sad to find out that the owner of the deli (Antonio Lauria) and a dear friend passed away on Friday September 9th, 2016.  We will miss his smile and presence when we stop over to get lunch and bring it back over the shop.

Early Saturday afternoon purple ribbons were tied from the beginning of the street to the end of the street to mourn the loss of a good man and dear friend. As shop owners we love creating handmade items but feel that life is important as well.  We love to post about what we’re doing, going, and seeing. See more posts of the Sow’s Ear Studio family and what we’ve been doing.
